Sandburg 20, Joliet 14: For a while, this SICA Blue opener appeared headed the route of a blowout. But Joliet caught fire late, sparked by Mark Hosey’s 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

“We were fortunate to come out with a win,” said Sandburg coach Mike Navarro. “Our defense played awesome. If we can play poorly and still come out with a win, we’ll be OK.”

Sandburg (3-0) led early on Zak Kustok’s 25-yard scoring strike to Matt Schoen. Dan Rea upped the lead to 13-0 on a third-quarter score.

But Hosey cut the deficit on his kickoff return and Joliet (1-2), after Kustok snuck in from 2 yards out, scored on Paulie Forsythe’s 25-yard pass to Hosey.

“They really hung with us,” Kustok said.

“You go through a lot of ups and downs in the season,” Marist coach Werner Emmrich said. “When you win a game like this–one that looks hopeless–it will definitely help down the road.”

Holy Cross’ Chris Wright ran 19 times for 121 yards and caught two passes for 66 yards, including a first-quarter touchdown.
